For some, a blog is a simple way to express thoughts, and yet for others it is a labor
of love, laced with passion and dripping of hard work. In fact, what most people simply do
not realize is that quite a bit goes into actually getting a blog off the ground successfully; the
common misconception being the belief that a blog is only a journal of sorts, a place to jot down
one’s daily thoughts, feelings, rants, and raves. This is no doubt a dangerous way of thinking that
can lead to the ultimate failure of a blog within months of getting started.
Qualities of a good blog include a targeted niche and demographic, keyword-centered
content, and a marketing plan to increase exposure, resulting in increased traffic. Quality content
coupled with a targeted demographic is a surefire way to assure yourself that you are providing
your readers with beneficial information; in other words, stuff they want to hear. Furthermore,
good content is a good marketing tool on its own. For instance, it is through a blog’s content (ex:
articles, blog posts, reviews, giveaways, etc.) that a blog owner can announce a new series of
posts, give away products for a promotion, and
even hold a contest to boost traffic. Essentially, your readers enjoy the opportunity to read
quality, informative posts, while you get the promotional benefit. In a sense, both parties win!
Bear in mind that a good blog is one that is updated frequently as well. You cannot
expect to have a successful blog if you add, say, an article every six months. No reader is going
to want to hang around waiting for six months for you to post again—that’s worse than your
favorite TV show making you wait 6 months for the new season to start. In fact, you will notice
that a lot of blogs are updated with at least one new post every single day. As a beginner, you
should most likely aim for the goal of one new post per week. This will create an adequate time
frame to build a readership base, as well as alleviate some of the stress that comes with churning
out a new post every day.
While building a successful blog is no easy matter, the benefits that can be derived from
the end product are well worth the hard work and effort you put into it; especially if you are able
to use your blog to generate revenue. Keep in mind though, that success does not usually come
overnight. You are really going to have to commit if you truly hope to see any good come from a
venture into blogging.
