Maybe I should start this off by saying I’m not usually a fan of green (poop green for that matter). But for some reason, Vitamin’s earthy blend of green, orange, and brown really appeal to me. The fresh look of the site and the clean, simplistic nature of it really eases on the eye and grows on the viewer.
Upon first visiting the site, I was a little overwhelmed with the amount of content displayed on the front page. In total, there are about 12 – 15 different modules, content headers, and entries. This can be viewed as both a good thing, and a bad thing. I’ve always been a fan of smaller content pages with little information on the front page (hello people! this is what a navigation is for?) but as a resource site, Vitamin really organizes their massive amounts of content in a good manner. Everything is easy to read, and the same graphic bars aren’t used over and over again making it look repetitive, dull, and boring.
The inner pages of the site really make the site shine as well. It is organized very neatly, and everything is easy to read, and isn’t to harsh on the eyes. The information doesn’t overwhelm you like on the front page, and because there is a lot of space inbetween everything, you don’t get a sense of being cramped on the site. The articles are all well written, and everything the site offers as a resource is very useful.
But not every site is perfect, and with that said, there are a couple of things that I would change on the site. For one, I think I would have the navigation and header be seperated by something a little more distinct. Right now, it looks like an unclear transition between the two. Perhaps a different navigation color? Maybe incorporating the orange would’ve looked a little better to reinforce the accent color. Also, the left side bar is grey, and the right one is black. Why is this?
Though the front page’s content is pretty organized and easy on the eye, I think it’s a little information overload. There are some un needed things on the page such as having four updated articles on the bottom left (one or two will do). Then, the site displays another two articles and resource material at the top of the page. This is a little to much, and I think that had Vitamin gone for something a little more conservative in terms of content, I think they could’ve had themselves a flawless front page.
All in all, Vitamin is a great resource site that is easy on the eye and incorporates a fresh, earthy tone that can make even the green haters love it. Though there is a lot of content on the site, it’s well organized, well placed, and the sub pages are excellent and top notch.
